THIS HOLY GROUND PRAYER WALL
A Sanctuary of Prayer
"Prayers are tools, but with this clarification:
prayers are not tools for doing or getting, but for being and becoming."
—Eugene Peterson
"
So we are drawn into prayer
not by obligation
or by need or by desire,
but by divine Love.
God seeking. God waiting.
God wooing.
God pursuing.
This emphasis upon the loving heart of God
seeking us out is, of course, drawing from
a long and deep biblical tradition about prayer."
- Richard Foster

Lord, hear our prayers!
“You’re familiar with the old written law, ‘Love your friend,’ and its unwritten companion, ‘Hate your enemy.’ I’m
challenging that. I’m telling you to love your enemies. Let them bring out the best in you, not the worst. When someone gives you a hard time, respond with the energies of prayer, for then you are working out of your true selves, your
God-created selves. This is what God does. He gives his best—the sun to warm and the rain to nourish—to everyone, regardless: the good and bad, the nice and nasty. If all you do is love the lovable, do you expect a bonus? Anybody can do that. If you simply say hello to those who greet you, do you expect a medal? Any run-of-the-mill sinner does that."
- JESUS (Matthew 5:43-47 MSG)

We make a pause
amid many voices –
some innocent and some seductive
some violent and some coercive,
some forgiven and genuine,
some not.
Amid this cacophony that pulls us
In many directions,
we have these old voices of Your prophets;
these voices attest to
Your fierce self,
Your severe summons,
Your generous promise,
Your abiding presence.
Give us good ears,
perchance You have a word for us tonight;
Give us grace and courage to listen,
to answer,
to care,
and to rejoice,
that we may be more fully Your people.

The Prayer of St. Columba
Be a bright flame before me, O God
a guiding star above me.
Be a smooth path below me,
a kindly shepherd behind me
today, tonight, and for ever.
Alone with none but you, my God
I journey on my way;
what need I fear when you are near,
O Lord of night and day?
More secure am I within your hand
than if a multitude did round me stand.
Amen.

Peace Prayer
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace:
where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
where there is sadness, joy.
O divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek
to be consoled as to console,
to be understood as to understand,
to be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive,
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.
Amen.

Praying Psalm 1
Blessed is the one
who does not walk in step with the wicked
or stand in the way that sinners take
or sit in the company of mockers,
but whose delight is in the law of the Lord,
and who meditates on his law day and night.
That person is like a tree planted by streams of water,
which yields its fruit in season
and whose leaf does not wither—
whatever they do prospers.
Not so the wicked!
They are like chaff
that the wind blows away.
Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment,
nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous.
For the Lord watches over the way of the righteous,
but the way of the wicked leads to destruction.

Praying Psalm 131
O Lord, my heart is not lifted up,
my eyes are not raised too high;
I do not occupy myself with things
too great and too marvelous for me.
But I have calmed and quieted my soul,
like a weaned child with its mother;
my soul is like the weaned child that is with me.
O Israel, hope in the Lord
from this time on and forevermore.

Leave me alone with God
as much as may be.
As the tide draws the waters
close in upon the shore,
make me an island, set apart,
alone with you, God, holy to you.
Then with the turning of the tide
prepare me to carry your presence
to the busy world beyond,
The world that rushes in on me,
'till the waters come again
and fold me back to you.

Almighty God, may we live above the world
Its low turns and unsatisfying pursuits
And may we still endeavoring to please You
To root out every remainder of our human corruption
And to increase in every Christian grace
May we indeed bear about us the likeness of our Heavenly Father
And be doing good in our generation
To the will of God
Until at length You shall receive us to Yourself
And make us partakers of the pleasures
Which are at your right hand, forevermore
Amen.

For thus said the Lord God, the Holy One of Israel: In returning and rest you shall be saved; in quietness and in trust shall be your strength. (Isaiah 30:15)
O God, we believe what You say. We believe You are our only way, Lord Jesus. We know You are breathing Life into us, Holy Spirit. Sweet Lord, You said, “I will do this thing.” You convinced us that You first dreamed This Holy Ground and You desire for us to dream Your dream as our own. We do not YET know what this means, or how we live and love according to Your vision, Your action, Your will. If we are in any way out of alignment with You, by Your grace and mercy, please set us right. Forgive us our sins and restore us to the joy of Your salvation.
Lord, we need to see You act on behalf of Your promise. You have promised new life in Your Spirit; Holy Spirit You are welcome here! Come, Lord Jesus! Abba God, rend the heavens and come down! Nothing You proclaim or promise is void. You never give up. You are never defeated. Let our faithfulness, prayers and doings in Christ, glorify You, O Holy God, O King of Kings. Rise up larger than we yet believe so that with Your rising up, our faith, trust, confidence will be supernaturally grown. Bring Your people to deeper, life-engaging faith.
You alone are God. You alone are the Holy One. You have chosen us and called us, “Friends.” Take us by surprise and let us see Your glory – as much as we can bear. Show us Your next step, that we may follow all the more nearly.
Raise up This Holy Ground as Your Sanctuary of Prayer on the mount You choose as a place to draw Your beloveds to Yourself. You promised. To You alone will be the glory. Amen

O Sweet God of Love and Mercy, gather us in. We are feeling disconnected, separated, almost dangerous to one another. It is hard to find a blessing in these times, but You are never forsaking us, never giving up on us.
Always Your hope is in us, You are for us. Be especially near to those feeling "too far away for too long." Help us to know how to reach out to one another in safe ways and meet each other where we are. Help us to know what CAN happen and stop talking in terms of what SHOULD happen. You alone are God and oh, how You love us. Prepare Your way in us that we would love You and one another with the heart of Jesus. Amen.

Emmanuel, God with us, thank You for staying. We know that You are with us! This season of Advent we celebrate Your coming - and still we wait for Your parousia. Let our awareness of Your presence now reignite our anticipation and expectation of Your return. Let us live more fully knowing Your Kingdom come.
